| Cleaning Instructions
for Fabric Stains |
|
| Successful
removal of stains from fabric depends on the basic principle of not allowing
the stain to become set. A stain should be removed at the first possible opportunity.
Different materials require different stain removers. Use of an incorrect remover
may damage or even destroy the fabric. If the stain
is known to be of a non-greasy nature, sponging with cold water, detergent and
bleach may be all that is necessary, and should be followed by thorough rinsing
in clean water. For specific stains refer to the following list: |

| Acid |
Neutralize with ammonia. |
|
| Adhesive tape |
Harden with ice cubes; rub off with fingers. |
|
| Alcoholic beverages |
Rinse with cold water immediately followed by white vinegar,
then rinse again with cold water. |
|
| Alkali |
Neutralize with vinegar. |
|
| Blood |
Rinse in cold water, then in diluted ammonia.
Sponge with detergent and water; thoroughly rinse with cold water. |
|
| Ice cream |
Sponge with carbon tetrachloride. |
|
| Iodine |
Sponge with alcohol. |
|
| Ink (writing) |
If fresh, sponge with detergent and water. If
dried, sponge with bleach, then sponge with oxalic acid, then scrub with
detergent and water. |
|
| Ink (ball point) |
Scrub with detergent and water, rinse. If
stain remains, use petroleum jelly, then sponge with carbon
tetrachloride. Some inks dissolve in
glycerine followed by shampoo. |

| Iron rust |
Sponge
with oxalic acid, rinse well; or spread with salt, moisten with lemon juice,
and place in sun. |

| Lipstick |
Sponge
with alcohol or carbon tetrachloride. |
|
| Mildew |
Sponge with bleach. |
|
| Milk or cream |
Sponge
with carbon tetrachloride. |
|
| Mustard |
Apply warm glycerine; wash with sudsy water
and hydrosulphite bleach. |
|
| Oil |
Scrub
with detergent and water and sponge with carbon tetrachloride. |
|
| Paint |
Scrub
with detergent and water and sponge with carbon tetrachloride or with
turpentine (latex and acrylic paints wash away if not dried). |
|
| Perspiration |
Sponge with peroxide and ammonia. |
|
| Rust |
Sponge with lemon, vinegar or oxalic acid. |
|
| Sugar |
Sponge with hot water. |
|
| Tar |
Moisten with carbon tetrachloride.Scrape
off, then sponge residue with same solvent. |
|
| Tea |
Scrub
with borax solution, rinse; or keep stain moist with lemon juice, then expose
to sun for a day or two. |
|
| Mildew |
Sponge
with laundry bleach and let stand for 5 minutes, followed by thorough rinse
with water. |
